Esther K. McElroy, 94, of Cranston died Thursday, September 7, 2017 at Rhode Island Hospital. She was the beloved wife of the late Francis James McElroy. They were married 53 years at the time of his passing in 1998.

Born in Chicago, IL, Esther was a daughter of the late Frank and Margaret (Yuhos) Somen.

Esther was employed as a Computer Operator at the Cranston Police Department and later at Cranston City Hall until retiring in 1979. During WWII, she honorably served in the US Marine Corps.

Esther was an avid golfer and a member of Cranston Country Club. She enjoyed reading, swimming, traveling, arts & crafts, singing, listening to music, solving crossword puzzles and watching movies. Esther was also an advocate for physical fitness.

Esther is survived by her loving children: Donna M. Manson of Cranston, Paul F. McElroy (Elizabeth) of Assonet, MA and James S. McElroy (Cathleen) of Cranston; and four cherished grandchildren: David J. Manson, Daniel McElroy, Jessica McElroy and Jennifer McElroy.

She was the sister of the late Helen Lentz, Paul Somen and Elizabeth Price.

Her Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, September 15, 2017 at 10 AM in Immaculate Conception Church, 237 Garden Hills Drive, Cranston. Burial with military honors will follow in the RI Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Exeter. Visiting hours are respectfully omitted.

In lieu of flowers, gifts in her memory may be made to: Paralyzed Veterans of America, Attn: Processing Dept., PO Box 758532, Topeka, KS 66675-9910.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to THE URQUHART-MURPHY FUNERAL HOME, 800 Greenwich Ave., Warwick.
