David J. Critchett passed away from complications due to Lou Gehrig's Disease. He was the son of Dana and Anna L. (Cerutti) Critchett and after his first father died, the stepson of Stanley T. Silva.

A graduate of Gloucester High School, Class of 1965, he earned both undergraduate and graduate degrees in English and spent the next forty-one years teaching English at the Community College of Rhode Island, where he made enduring friendships that lasted after his retirement in 2013. He enjoyed teaching, the company of colleagues, and participating in professional organizations.

He was faculty advisor to the college's canoe club for many years, and many of his firm friendships were born during river excursions. In addition to canoeing, he enjoyed bicycling, hiking, walking, much reading, Irish and classical music, his wife's fabulous cooking, lively company, and caring nature, his son's humanity and his stepson's perseverance. He never got the sand out of his shoes, the salt out of his hair, or the sound of the tide out of his ears, and he loved the scenic beauty both of his adopted state, RI, and his hometown, Gloucester, MA, where he returned to visit cherished family and friends throughout his life.

David is survived by his beloved wife, Helret (Connors) Critchett, his son and daughter-in-law, Marc Critchett and Athena Kelner, his stepson Matthew Atwood, and several cousins and friends.

His funeral will be held on Saturday, May 13, 2017 at 11 AM in THE URQUHART-MURPHY FUNERAL HOME, 800 Greenwich Avenue, Warwick. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the funeral home on Saturday from 10 AM - 11 AM. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, gifts in his memory may be made to: ALS Association Rhode Island Chapter, 2374 Post Road, #103, Warwick, RI 02886 or at www.webri.alsa.org.
