Avis Peck (Welch) Dickerson died peacefully in her sleep on January 13, 2017 at the age of 95. She worked alongside her late husband, John, as they built up Apponaug Harbor Marina in Warwick, which they started with John's brothers in 1959.

She was born in East Providence, a daughter of the late William B. and Avis F. (Peck) Welch.

A math whiz, Avis served as treasurer for the annual reunions of her Cranston High School Class of 1938. She graduated from Bryant College in 1939, and worked at Brown University in the Admissions Office for Dr. Bruce Bigelow. She described her first assignment there as stamping the new tuition rate of $300 on catalogs. She also worked at Massachusetts Mutual, calculating annual cash values before the advent of computers.

She enjoyed gardening, reading mysteries, taking photos, and playing Scrabble®. She was a Life Member and membership chair of the East Greenwich/Warwick Garden Club, and attended their final meeting in November. An avid sailor, she was a Life Member of Apponaug Harbor Yacht Club.  She traveled to China, Switzerland, England, Bermuda, the Caribbean, and took many trips to several of the Hawaiian Islands.

She is survived by daughter Leigh Davidson of San Francisco, son John A. Dickerson, Jr. (Barbara) of Warwick and many nieces and nephews.  She was the sister of the late William Welch, Edward Welch and Mary Lou Carr.

Her Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, January 19, 2017 at 11:00 am in THE URQUHART-MURPHY FUNERAL HOME, 800 Greenwich Avenue, Route 5, Warwick (Exit 12A on I-95).  Burial in Pawtuxet Memorial Park, Warwick.  Relatives and friends are invited.  Calling Hours will be held on Wednesday from 4:00-7:00 pm
